Computers as Teachers

Well, it seems that computers are taking the place of reading and math at Walker Grant for many of our students.

Within the next few weeks, all math students will be required to spend one math class per week in the computer lab on a program called SuccessMaker.

All Special Education and ESL students will be substituting reading class and ESL classes EVERY DAY with a reading program called FastForWord.

Don't our children spend enough time sitting on their bottoms staring at a computer screen?

Seems that ALL the city schools are using fast forword in the computer labs. What happened to the reading groups and the 1 one 1 personal contact that is needed, especially for special ed and ESL students.

"ESPECIALLY the sped and ESL students."
Yes, it does seem a little backwards. There are excellent programs that cost a lot less (Herman, Orton-Gillingham for sped) that produce the same results, and possibly longer lasting, than these computer programs. AND they allow for interaction with a person!
Our regular students will now spend an entire class per week on the computer for math. Why are parents not complaining? Maybe they don't know...?

fast forward is the brain child of administrators who don't really want to do the work to fix things; and probably some consultant who gets part of the BIG money the ridiculous program cost. at HM, students get off the bus in the am and are herded immediately into fast forward (guess breakfast doesn't matter as much).
